Preparing Mediated Presentations

Goals and Objectives:

  • Students are able to create a recorded presentation that shows both a visual aid and video of themselves

Rationale: Creating mediated presentations allows you to bridge distance and time to communicate with others. Effective mediated presentations can also be useful because they can be re-used and reviewed as necessary.

Materials Needed

Materials:

  • A computer with Internet access for demonstration
  • A board and markers/chalk

Technology:

  • At least one computer with Internet access per group

Outline of the Lesson

  1. Review of previous session’s content
  2. Lesson opening
  3. Discussion of various methods of recording
  4. Demonstration of recording a mediated presentation
  5. Face-to-face Formative Assessment:
    1. Group students into groups of 2-3. Ensure each group has access to a laptop
    2. Record a video which shows the students and the visual aid
    3. Show the video to the class
    4. Debrief the activity
  6. Hybrid/Online Formative Assessment:
    1. Record a video which shows both you and your visual aid
    2. Upload the video to YouTube
    3. Submit the URL for the YouTube video on the Learning Management System
  7. Lesson closing

Limitations

This lesson requires student access to online resources and personal computers. Strategic grouping may be necessary for face-to-face lessons.
